Bathroom planning advice

How to prepare for a bathroom installation

A good installation starts before the first fitting is removed. Decisions about the layout, products and household arrangements are easier to resolve while the bathroom is still in use. A clear brief also helps your installer distinguish essential requirements from ideas that can be explored later.

Start with what needs to work better

Write down the everyday frustrations: an awkward shower entrance, poor storage, insufficient lighting or a bath nobody uses. Explain who uses the room and whether their requirements differ. Add a few reference images, but say what you like about each one rather than asking for a photograph to be reproduced regardless of the space.

Give the assessment useful information

Send photographs of the whole room, the doorway and existing fittings, together with approximate measurements and your postcode. Mention known leaks, previous repairs and anything you want retained. We offer free home surveys, arranged around the project and availability. A remote discussion can establish a direction without settling every hidden detail.

Finalise the connected choices together

The suite, shower, storage, lighting, ventilation and floor need to work as a single proposal. Confirm product details before ordering and check who is responsible for supply, delivery and inspection. Where the work may need building-control involvement or other approvals, establish the applicable route with the installer or relevant authority before starting.

Plan for life during the work

Tell the team if this is your only bathroom, if access through the home is restricted or if anyone needs particular assistance. Discuss working access, protection of adjacent areas, material storage, removal arrangements and how updates will be communicated. Do not assume an alternative toilet or shower will remain available without an agreed arrangement.

Keep the handover practical

Before completion, walk through the agreed work and record anything outstanding. Ask how the chosen products should be used and maintained, where relevant access points are and what documentation applies to the installation. Keep product details and the final scope together so future questions can be answered without trying to identify everything from memory.

Before you enquire

  • Agree the written scope and product specification.
  • Clarify supply responsibilities and availability.
  • Discuss household access and bathroom use during work.
  • Record agreed changes as the project develops.
  • Keep handover information and product details.
