The existing room sets the starting point
Keeping a workable layout may reduce the extent of some alterations, but it does not prove that the existing pipework, floor or walls are ready for reuse. Removal can reveal conditions that were not visible at the first visit. Ask which assumptions the quotation makes and how any newly discovered work would be discussed and priced before proceeding.
Changing the layout changes more than the drawing
Moving a toilet, basin or shower can involve new service routes and additional making good. A wet room also needs its preparation and drainage arrangement considered as a complete system. Establish the practical scope before treating the suite, tiles and accessories as the entire cost of the project.
Product choices need a complete specification
The price of a visible fitting does not always include every component needed to install it. Agree the exact products, finishes and associated parts where possible. Tile size and pattern, storage, heating and lighting choices can also change the work involved. Separate essential requirements from optional upgrades so decisions are easier to compare.
Compare like with like
Check removal, disposal, surface preparation, waterproofing, plumbing, electrical work, fittings, finishing and any design work. Ask whether the total includes applicable VAT and identify exclusions. A shorter quotation may simply describe less work; a longer one still needs to be clear. Avoid assuming either price is better until the scopes match.
Decide your priorities before cutting the scope
List the problems the renovation must solve, then the features you would like if the budget allows. Discuss simpler finishes or a different layout before removing necessary preparation from the plan. Keep a record of agreed changes so the final specification, price and expectations remain aligned.
Before you enquire
- Photograph the room and note its approximate dimensions.
- List fittings you want to keep or replace.
- Share a realistic budget range and your priorities.
- Ask what is included, excluded and still subject to assessment.
- Confirm how changes will be agreed before extra work starts.
